THROWBACK THURSDAY: 2003 Singin’ in the Rain Summer Outreach—under the stars!
“Singin’ In the Rain” – 2003 Neighborhood Church
In 1979 Les Neal became the new Minister of Music at Neighborhood Church. Over his first few years here he brought some positive changes to Sunday morning worship and new vision for the creative outreaches. Les realized that we had wonderful opportunities of creative outreach in our community at Christmas and Easter but we had nothing in the summer to continue putting a positive touch on the unsaved. Since its inception our summer musicals have reached the lives of more than 100,000 people. The Fine Arts team main goal each year is to use Art as a means to bring people to Christ.
In 1985 Les began a summer dinner theater in the gym that brought many new people to neighborhood church. In 1987 the first Broadway Musical “Music Man” was presented in the gym.
After several years the summer musical outreach moved to the CMC outside courtyard where we continued to present Broadway musicals to our community “under the stars” and have an opportunity to share the gospel at the end. In those years we had around 2,500 people attend these outdoor musicals.
In the summer of 2009 the music and arts ministry was given the opportunity to move into the main auditorium where we were able to present an original musical production of “Prince of Egypt. The ministry had continued to grow and now 7,000 to 8,000 people regularly attend these musicals.
In 2005 Kevin Ledbetter took over the directorship of the music from Les who retired, and has worked with the Fine Arts creative team since them. Before taking over that position he played in the 3Crosses orchestra, and was in several summer musicals as one of the cast.
“Singin’ In The Rain” was presented 16 years ago in the outside courtyard and now this summer it is being presented again in the main auditorium (July 26-Aug 4). We hope you enjoy looking back at the memories and pictures from the 2003 summer outreach.
